The 2014 Annual Gumbo Gala Benefitting Episcopal Place

Kids with doughnut boxes, car washes and any other kind of fund raiser will always suck me in.
The 2014 Annual Gumbo Gala at Sloss Furnaces was no different. Since I am a HUGE fan of  gumbo, this was a definite win-win situation. This annual event is organized to benefit the residents of Episcopal Place in Birmingham. This property offers seniors and disabled individuals the opportunity to live in an environment where they will receive a great place to live and assistance in just about every area of need.
Here are just a few of the benefits listed on their website:

  • Apartment rent based on income
  •  Specially equipped apartments for residents with mobility and hearing disabilities
  •  Noonday meals are delivered to Episcopal Place Monday through Friday to participating residents.
  • Free transportation for weekly grocery shopping
  • Frail, low income residents may qualify to receive housekeeping services in their apartment. The cost of these services is shared between the resident, HUD and Episcopal Place
  • Supportive Services Coordinator (Social Worker) on site
These are only a few of MANY excellent benefits for people in need of a home with on site assistance in these ares.

One way they manage to fund themselves is the Gumbo Gala Cook-Off competition. The categories include professional and back yard teams. For a general admission price of only $15.00, attendees are given the opportunity to taste dozens of competitors gumbo. There were activities for kids, great music by Rollin' In The Hay & vendors that focused on Alabama products and services.
If you missed it, shame on you. However, you will have a chance to get in on the fun next year.
For more information for yourself or your loved one or to DONATE to Episcopal Place, visit their website at http://www.episcopalplace.org/.
A little crawfish told me that $50,000.00 was raised at this event. High five to Birmingham for supporting this event.
