Cocina Superior, Superior Food Or Just Hype?

Having grown up with a mom that has always been pretty practical, I can tell you that rarely does she ever feel ripped off. She wants the most for her money and knows how to look for great deals. Her teachings have rubbed off on me. The fact that I know how to spot a pretty good deal shouldn't surprise anyone that knows us both. However, I have come to a bump in the road.

Typically, I rarely have that "ripped off" feeling after a meal. I've been fortunate enough to have the experience of finding some really great deals during my days of raiding restaurants. My followers tend to keep me informed of great deals and steals around town. (Thanks everyone!!)
I've heard so many people rave about the food at Cocina Superior.
I thought that it was high time that I stepped in to see what all of the fuss was about.

Atmosphere: A very appealing, casual dining atmosphere. Not too busy on this particular day. They have a contemporary outdoor seating area and a view of the kitchen from the sidewalk outside. It was fascinating to see the kitchen staff at work in front of the tortilla machines pressing out & cutting the fresh tortilla rounds.

The meal: I had the Chipotle Shrimp. This consists of  grilled shrimp tossed in chipotle butter served with rice, a side of fresh pico de gallo, sliced avocado & topped with tortilla strips. For dessert I had the Tres Leches, a fluffy vanilla sponge cake soaked in three types of milk w/ lemon/ lime icing accompanied by sliced strawberries.

The staff: My server was really nice and knew the menu. I did, however, observe a couple of things in the server/ side prep area that I will discreetly mention to the manager. I'm pretty sure this was not okay.

The Prices: For what they charged, I was expecting something a little more than what I got in terms of quality.  Maybe I should have gotten a recommendation on which dish to try before this visit. The Chipotle shrimp dinner $17. The dessert $6. The feeling that I'd been ripped off = Priceless.

Overall experience: I was underwhelmed.  I don't see what the fuss is about. This was the disappointment of the year. I hope this wasn't too harsh as I don't really like to give "bad" reviews. :(
Hopefully Cocina will continue to observe opportunities to improve upon quality and enhance the dining experience for future patrons.

If you have visited this restaurant and had a great experience, please let me know by emailing me at restaurantraider@gmail.com or sending a tweet to me at @RestaurantRaidr

*I retract my statement about always giving good reviews.
