REVIEW: Experience the Luck Of The Irish At Buck Mulligan's

I love Birmingham's South side. It's one of the most popular spots in town. 5 Point's South has some of the most interesting people AND some of the best food in town. One place that I've heard a great deal about is Buck Mulligan's Public House, an authentic Irish pub.  (Thanks Paul for the suggestion)

Buck Mulligan's is a popular spot it seems. I picked a Sunday to #RAID the place and had a most interesting experience.

Atmosphere: The atmosphere was very busy on this particular Sunday night. There was a performance by an Irish band, dancing and a full house. There was standing room only as several people waited for booths, tables and bar seats to be vacated. My dinner companion and I ended up with the last two available bar seats. I found the place to be spacious enough to accommodate a large crowd with additional room for Irish style dancing.

The Meal: The menu was sooooo good looking. We were able to take as much time as we needed to order from the extensive menu full of authentic Irish dishes. It was actually a little hard to choose from. We wanted one of everything. Decisions.... Decisions.... After about 10 minutes of menu examination, my dinner companion decided on the grilled chicken sandwich. This chicken is marinated for 24 hours before being grilled. The sandwich also included tomatoes, honey mustard and spinach leaves w/ a side of house cut fries (or chips as the Irish call them). I decided on the corned beef and cabbage: tender, pulled corned beef w/ Craic cabbage, Champ & Irish soda bread. This was plate cleaning good!

The Prices: The chicken sandwich was $8.99. The corned beef and cabbage dish was $12.99. Not bad for the portions we received. The rest of the menu is priced for average sized budgets as well. I don't think you will be disappointed.

The Staff: Our server/ bartender and everyone else was outstanding. Can't wait to go back, just not on a night that they will be this crowded.

Overall dining experience: Wonderful! I loved the service and the authenticity that Buck Mulligan's Public House offered. Can't wait to try additional menu items.

PROFILE: Lunch at Bistro ProVare at Jefferson State

If you are looking for amazing food off the beaten path, check out Bistro ProVare at Jefferson State's Shelby Campus. The culinary and hospitality program at Jeff State is one of the top programs in the state of Alabama. If you've ever thought about cooking school, this would be a great option.

Bistro ProVare has a restaurant inside of the culinary arts department. While seating is limited, they tend to draw a large crowd daily for lunch. They are currently offering a 3 course meal at a fixed price.

Recently some friends and I decided to check out the delicious menu cooked up by the culinary students at the Bistro. *Be sure to check their website often as the menu might change. During this visit we tried the creamy potato cheddar soup, cucumber & tomato salad, Panko crusted red snapper & the Dukkah spiced lamb chops. For dessert, we had the chocolate chip bread pudding with caramel swirl ice cream accompanied with fresh berries.

Check out the photos & descriptions below.
